Lenten Devotional for 2021 (rewritten)

Jeremiah 12:1-16

I sit in the Trader Joe’s lot,
engine ticking, news hissing its ruin.

Another story of greed,
another bruise on the world.
I hit the steering wheel.
Why let the decent struggle?
Why let the corrupt live soft?

Silence.
Then heat rising through the cold car,
the air thickening with July flowers —
honeysuckle, maybe —
and a faint chorus of peepers
that had no business singing in March.

A voice, small and amused:
Are you serious?

Look around.
Rot is not reward.
Evil burns itself for short-term gain.
You — all of you — are mine;
when one festers,
I send another to draw the poison.

If this moment floors you,
how will you stand when I call?
How will you find Me
if you curse every pebble in your path?

Turn toward Me.
Even now.
Be. My. Mercy.

The voice faded.
My face was blotched, my hands white on the wheel.
I went inside for groceries,
still shaking.

Later, the crack in the windshield was gone.
The ashtrays were full of honeysuckle.
It bloomed and dried there,
a brief, sweet riot,
before I finally cleaned it out.
