After a lot of work behind the scenes, the Spring 2016 GenEdge work is coming to fruition. Over 30 people (faculty, staff, and students) from across the City Tech campus submitted work to be displayed in three amazing and concurrent exhibits which will happen from April 11-15. So far I’ve made the logo, the branding campaign, a style guide, several animated pieces, assignments for students, staff, and faculty… Oh, and video spots that are coming up. I curated a show, I am documenting it all… A lot of work! I hope it makes a difference for City Tech!
False Dichotomy is beginning to truly take form! I have artists agreeing to show, essays coming in from respected members of the fine art printmaking community, and a site in place! There is a lot to do: I have to find funding to print a decent catalog–but I feel so renewed. I have not been able to make a lot of work myself this year, but I can contribute through facilitation and research!
The year was good, overall. I was pretty overwhelmed by the call of service, so everything else paled a bit. My art making took an additional hit, but that was the last remnants of the Year from Hell – Jen and I had to make sure we were back in good financial shape. in 2016, my art and research come first. I am turning down all freelance yet again and turning my attention to several projects that I have managed to keep going in dribs and drabs. I have worked and reworked the Interactive / Web 1 class a few times over the last couple of years. It is now the core of my approach to teaching interaction design thinking: I use the foundation of empathic research and altruistic design to push my students to create work that can get them noticed in the job market. I have the students go through the entire design cycle at a rapid pace so that we have time to also develop our pitches for the last day: I strive to have my students learn not only to think of lovely and useful ideas, but also have the tools to get those ideas made. In order to help my students really explore motion, I introduce animated gifs as a fast and fun means to get the pump primed. Sometimes, students go CRAZY with them. And sometimes they go crazy twice.
This is the vision I originally developed for the City Tech Printmaking Club, and now that we have officers, it is starting to become a reality! Of course, I am just an advisor–what the students make of all of this is up to them. Every student at City Tech should know we exist. Events, demos, classes, shows…the whole community needs to know us as a force for good. Printmaking is about generosity, democracy, opportunity, and making something with what seems tone nothing. Let’s make our own equipment, be scrappy, fight the good fight! This club is about empowerment through personal visual communication. Printmaking taught me problem solving, gave me a history of protest, propaganda, and commerce to draw from as I made my art. Let’s get excited about the potential involved in a few simple items, some ingenuity, and a lot of elbow grease. Let’s build presses, screens, tools! I have been invited to do a rather impromptu 3 week intensive at Parsons, teaching an introduction to Interaction Design. I have been teaching this subject from all sorts of different directions, so this is a wonderful opportunity to collaborate with students. These are all self-selected volunteers who expressed a need for some reinforcement. I am so honored to have been asked to helm the workshop for them. More to come!
The Gowanus Studio Space (GSS) offers space, equipment and support to emerging designers, artists and craftspeople. Located in the historically industrial neighborhood along the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn, GSS houses a large industrial arts workshop as well as private studios and exhibition space. By providing training, workspace, tools and resources, GSS encourages cross-pollination between the art/design communities; supports new businesses and design projects; and is a vital arts resource for the surrounding community. For the last 2.5 years, I have served as the Publications and Information Manager: I design, maintain, and produce materials for print, exhibition, and screen. I disseminate, organize and maintain meeting notes and internal communications.
Service (work you do for the good of your community, organization, or polity that is unpaid and often uncredited) is where I put the entirety of my work and life experience into practice. It is where I have to bring all I have learned to bear in the most humble way possible. It is slow, hard, and often feels unrewarding in the short term. It is usually done from within a committee, with people who have other methods, agendas, and motivations. It is infuriating, then amazing, then infuriating all over again. Make no mistake – for these and so many other reasons, I absolutely love service. Service work is the ultimate in design, people. Do service. Always do some service. It keeps your head the right size while sharpening your every skill. If you can’t find service work to do, pick up one juicy pro-bono client. GIVE BACK and you will give yourself so much more. I taught Information Design for the WWW this semester. I designed the class so students got to go through two design cycles: the first was an accelerated one as the students worked in groups so we could go through the motions in a low-risk way. Students moved on to their own ideas, going through every phase, developing artifacts such as personas, sitemaps, wireframes, interviews, all while developing a look and feel. I had the students also work on how they would present their ideas at the end of the semester. Amazingly, some students went so far as to develop Kickstarter-esque videos. I tried to help the students get used to the idea that they could come up with, develop, and promote an idea of their own. They delivered. Syllabus
