Parsons Interactive / Web Design 1: F15

I have worked and reworked the Interactive / Web 1 class a few times over the last couple of years. It is now the core of my approach to teaching interaction design thinking: I use the foundation of empathic research and altruistic design to push my students to create work that can get them noticed in the job market. These students are in the AAS Program in the Art, Media & Technology Department at Parsons The New School. I have the students go through the entire design cycle at a rapid pace so that we have time to also develop our pitches for the last day: I strive to have my students learn not only to think of lovely and useful ideas, but also have the tools to get those ideas made. Each student must produce the artifacts of the Design Cycle amidst numerous check ins, small group crits, and work sessions. By the end of the semester, each student has a full blown case study of her idea, ready for portfolio or actual development.

COMD 1103: F15

After asking for four years, I was given the chance to teach Foundation Drawing at City Tech! This is a class originally structured as an introduction to perspective and technical drawing, very rigid in its structure. I have found over the years that my students are coming in without a lot of the hand training they had in my day, so I messed with the syllabus a bit. I did not emphasis isometric projections, for instance. These students were so starved for basic perspective and beyond that PERMISSION TO DRAW AT ALL. There were people with a lot of anxiety around using their first pencil up, a terror of taking up too much material, space, and time. I countered this with a lot of pep talks, exhaustive handouts culled from the best sources, and by finding ways to just get them to draw until I could feel the room finally relax. 15 minutes of warm ups every class I started each class with warm ups which also gave the class time to sharpen pencils, settle down, …

Teaching: Typography Through Printmaking Workshop

I taught my first workshop at the Brooklyn Brainery tonight and it was spectacular! Here is the handout I gave out. Support the Brooklyn Brainery! I had 12 students, all adults except for one extremely intelligent and prolific 9 year old. Absolutely excellent evening had by all!

Collaboration with my Child-Person

My daughter loves to paint and so we have been exploring watercolor for a few weeks. A few days in, I started seeing things in her work and decided to draw out a few. Rules: I must preserve M’s chosen orientation of the paper I get one shot, so I don’t use up all of her paintings and send her the message that her work is no good I get 3 minutes, although I think I can keep it at 2  30 seconds, maybe 1 minute My work cannot overshadow hers: it must be equal in terms of effort and coverage (I did that a couple times and it made me sad) For her third birthday, I will give her the option of drawing on my paintings so we both have the same opportunities We plan some of the images, depending on M’s interest. If she does not have a preference, I get to do whatever I want. I have upgraded us to watercolor paper and better paints and have started scanning these for a later collection …

Why Printmaking is Important (And Always Will Be)

I have been getting a lot of questions about bringing the arts back into classrooms of all sorts, so I have begun a series of articles I hope to compile into an eBook for instructors. As an ardent S.T.E.A.M. proponent, an artist, and an interaction designer, I feel we must be able to give our students a wide gamut of experiences in our classrooms in order for them to succeed. Printmaking is a huge part of my personal approach. Printing $500 Bills I still remember when I pulled my first print: I was 22, working on my BFA, and I had no idea what printmaking actually was. I knew I couldn’t afford the supplies for the painting classes and that my allergies had cut short my ceramics career (darned clay dust), so here I sat in a musty basement studio chipping away on some linoleum. It was a simple one-color linocut: I created a composition, transferred it to my block, and carved it out as best I could. I inked it up, ran it through the press, …

Living Lab Symposium

I presented my work to my fellows at City Tech during the event From Microbes to Stars: A Living Lab General Education Symposium. The City Tech GenEdge

I have begun rolling out the identity for an internal General Education Committee promotion here at City Tech. I had to weave the idea of what we have tried to do into the existing brand identity of the school while imparting the vigor and importance of the 60 credits of Gen Ed our students take here in the 4 year program. I have developed what will be an extensible logo system. Here is the base, a simple badge: I want it to be super simple, but slightly askew: general education classes make up 60 of the 120 credits our 4-year students take. The City Tech GenEdge is the result of years of effort by the college-wide curriculum development and the General Education Committee. We have taken the General Education requirements, the students’ needs, and the expectations of society to put together a meaningful approach to skills and attitudes we all need. This is the added benefit of culture and community our students and graduates deserve, and which helps them thrive as they enter the world …
