The “Old School” theme celebrates the aesthetics of twentieth century education through an art exhibition and companion book, as well as curated back-to-school stationery and unique objects. It is inspired by vintage flash cards, wooden desks, biology class, science fairs, crayons, card catalogs, textbooks, lunchboxes, gym class, maps, lockers, report cards, film strips, recess, chalk… and the list goes on! This was my very first college web design class and luckily my students were extremely hard working. I did not know how to build sites according to any real work flow as I had always hacked my stuff with google searches and Peachpit books. Becoming an instructor forced me to completely relearn how to design, to code, to work… It was such an honor to see these students put their sites together. I immediately bought a laser printer and printed out reams of articles and tutorials for the commute to my dayjob. It took about a year, but I managed to completely re-educate myself, all while working with my students. I tried to always be completely honest about what I did and did not know, which seemed to actually make everyone even more willing to learn.
